These rings are handmade in Côte d’Ivoire and represent the infamous Bronze heads of Benin.
The Benin Bronzes are a group of several thousand metal plaques and sculptures that decorated the royal palace of the Kingdom of Benin in what is now Edo State, Nigeria. Many pieces were commissioned specifically for the ancestral altars of past Obas and Queen Mothers. They were also used in other rituals to honour the ancestors and to validate the accession of a new Oba. They represented status, royalty and wealth.
